Apron Sink

Its really too bad that most modern kitchens don’t have an apron sink unless you have it changed or specifically ask for it when your home is being built because an apron sink is one of the most useful sinks that you can ever have in your kitchen. Some times the apron sink will also be referred to as a farm house sink and its for good reason.

You see back when most people lived on a farm or had a large family an apron sink was not just nice to have it was a necessity. The apron sink is much deeper than the new sinks. They were built that way to accommodate large pots and give you a deeper basin to clean dishes and other such things in but this isn’t the only benefit to the apron sink. They also have a large lip along all sides of the sink that will protrude beyond the edge of the sink in an upwards motion. At first glance it almost makes the apron sink look too big for the area that its in. If you don’t have a apron sink then you likely have the same struggle that most people do of having to clean behind the sink where water can get to and cause mold and mildew as well as the risk of having water splash or come out of the sink and onto the counters.

Like many of the things that were built a long time ago the apron sink was created to be durable, useable and to keep the things around it from being harmed. Of course that was a time when things were built to last. Because of the lip that protrudes up from the apron sink your counter tops and the back of the sink are all protected from water damage and because the apron sink is deeper than the sinks that are created now days you can find that great big pot under the water or a bucket for that matter!

I love everything about an apron sink and I insist on having one in my kitchen. It might not match the more modern appliances but this is an old design that was built using ones mind and thinking about the many uses of a sink and not with the mind of what’s going to save on space or short term money.
